Multiple Decorated Christmas Trees

“More than anything, we’re seeing the trend of multiple decorated trees in homes,” says Mercedes Fuller, vice president of merchandising at Balsam Hill. If you’re wondering whether all the trees should have a cohesive theme, or whether each should have its own distinct look, Fuller says secondary trees present a fun opportunity for themed and more playful decorations.

“Some will have a focus tree with a traditional holiday theme and then secondary trees might be focused on hobbies like cooking with kitchen-themed ornaments,” she says. Other secondary Christmas tree ideas include a kids’ tree with whimsical ornaments, a tree decorated solely with homemade ornaments, or one adorned with heirloom Christmas ornaments that have been passed on through generations.

Classic Green Trees

Evergreens fit an idyllic Christmas decorating formula, so it’s no surprise they continue to spearhead this season’s style. Lewis Puleo, vice president of holiday decor company Puleo International, confirms that classic green remains the most popular tree color—especially green trees with white flocking. White trees are the next-most popular shade, followed by blue-green, black, and pink hues.

If you’re looking for a tree that mimics the color and texture of real evergreen branches, you’ll need to splurge on a high-quality tree that reflects exceptional realism in the tiniest details. For example, Balsam Hill’s tree designs are inspired by nature, so you can actually shop by tree species to find varying shades of green. Their Classic Blue Spruce has blue-green needles, while the Noble Fir has a gray tint. For a truly classic look, the Fraser Firs come in a dark green hue with silver undersides.

Small Tabletop Christmas Trees

Small tabletop Christmas trees are an excellent option for small spaces, and they’re one of this year’s top Christmas trends. “We are seeing the popularity of small tabletop trees with novelty felt ornaments in children’s rooms,” Fuller says. Tabletop trees offer a way to bring in festive cheer on a smaller scale and make for great secondary trees.

Use a small tabletop Christmas tree in a kids’ bedroom or playroom, place one on an entryway console table for a festive welcome, or opt for a tabletop tree if you’re traveling for the holidays and don’t want to put up a big tree but still want some Christmas spirit.

Realistic Christmas Trees with Natural Decorations

This year, the earth tones and natural elements that have been trending in the world of interior design are making an appearance in Christmas decorations, too. “Non-traditional colors like earthy tones paired with natural elements are a chic and whimsical way to break from the traditional red and green palette,” Fuller says.

Put a moody spin on a nature-inspired color palette with with earthy brown, deep forest green, luscious burgundy, and warm beige, and add luxurious texture with velvet ornaments which are one of 2024’s biggest holiday trends. Complete the magical woodland tree with forest-inspired decorations such as mushrooms, birds, and owls and plenty of twinkle lights, of course.

Space-Saving Christmas Trees

There’s no need to forgo a Christmas tree just because you’re working with limited square footage. Fuller shares that space-saving Christmas trees are one of the year’s biggest trends. “Flat back and corner trees are great for decorating tight corners and small spaces”, she explains. They are the same height as a regular tree (you can get a six-foot or seven-foot flat back or corner tree), but their unique design fits right into a corner or against a wall, making them ideal for small apartments.

Space-saving trees are not only an excellent solution for small spaces, but they also work well as secondary trees. Fuller shares that customers love these non-traditional trees as they “allow them to enjoy the full Christmas experience for a fraction of the space.”

Illuminated Trees with Multicolor Lights

There’s nothing like the soft glow of twinkling Christmas lights on a cold winter evening, so it’s no surprise that pre-lit or illuminated trees are a popular pick this season. A pre-lit tree also introduces an additional design element: The age-old debate of colorful lights vs white lights. Puleo says warm white LED or incandescent lights are their most popular, followed by dual-color LED lights, which means they have the option to switch between a multi-color option and warm white. While white lights will never go out of style, we’ve seen an uptick in rainbow twinkle lights this season.
