When designer Nate Berkus shares insights into the style and trends he is currently keen on, I listen. His trendy, yet timeless style is one I am always trying to achieve in my own spaces. So when he recently took to Instagram to share his thoughts on couch trends and styles, I dutifully took note.
I’ve seen so many Nancy Meyers-inspired living rooms come across my desk and social media feeds recently, all classic in style, and many featuring slipcovered sofas – a look that I admittedly once thought a bit too fussy and dated.
But when I saw Nate had shared his couch dos and don’ts and hailed slipcovered sofas for their practicality and timelessness, it confirmed to me this outdated furniture trend is back, and I want in.
It has taken me a while to warm to the more laid-back, coastal feel of slipcovered sofas. I think it’s because until recently, I have only seen them in that setting – relaxed, ‘comfy’, vacation-vibe beach houses which, while beautiful, are not in line with my more urban home.
For so long, design trends have steered away from this more casual look in favor of simpler styles. But as Nate says in his Instagram post about slipcover sofas, ‘They’re making a comeback. I think the practicality never went away. I like adding dressmaker details like a box pleated skirt, contrast piping, or a grosgrain trim around the bottom hem.’
And they are more versatile than I first thought, too. Yes, they are very much in keeping with that country-style, Nancy Meyers aesthetic, but paired with more contemporary pieces, they work surprisingly well in a transitional space. And that’s the look I am after – a cozy slipcovered sofa mixed in with my modern, slightly more curated style.
