Room to grow … and plenty of color

When the new owners of this Greenville home met with designer Jason Morse, Owner of Home Matters, they told him they wanted the interior design to have a modern-vintage vibe with lots of color. Morse took the ideas from the owners’ Pinterest boards and other sources of inspiration and created a design that shows off their funky, eclectic side and integrates old and new with colorful flair.

Two key pieces in the living room came from the owner’s great grandparents. A vintage love seat has a bright, colorful pattern covering the back, while the front is toned-down solid turquoise. Continuing the blend of old and new, an heirloom chair is covered with a bright, floral print. To give the room an updated feel, Morse covered all the pillows on the love seat, chair and sofa in brightly colored fabric with modern designs and patterns.

In addition to color, the homeowners wanted animal prints incorporated into the design, so Morse added barstools with leopard print seats and rattan backs for a mid-century modern look. Ottomans in the living room are covered in a subtle tiger print and a pillow on the couch is leopard print. One of the most eye-catching items in the home is a rug at the entryway showcasing a cartoon leopard sprawled across a light-green background.

Inspired by all the stripes included on the homeowners’ Pinterest board, Morse incorporated black and white stripes in a bold way, on dining room chairs and wallpaper in the entryway.

The wall behind the bar is one of many areas of the home that are deeply personal to the owners.

Most of the artwork and posters on the wall were things the owners already had. Both are College of Charleston alumni, and they had some Southeastern Wildlife posters and a Low Country Oyster Festival poster from their parents.

Another area with lots of personal touches is the equestrian-themed room, which highlights a long history of horse-riding accomplishments.

Morse took a collection including ribbons, tack, pictures, boots and a riding helmet, and mixed the pieces to display them in an interesting and an elegant way. The owner says that with the leather and bright colors, it feels like “walking into a really nice tack room.”

Inspired by one of the homeowners’ favorite films, Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel, the primary bedroom feels like walking into a boutique hotel. A poster for the movie is prominently displayed and the room features shades of pinks and greens.

Green is the homeowner’s favorite color and Morse found a unique color wash for the walls. Wallpaper on the ceiling features gold birds and the homeowner says it “it feels like you are in a forest and it’s just really soothing and great.”

The homeowners also love music and attending concerts. They wanted to showcase their love of music and musical tastes, so Morse built a gallery wall next to the stairs that included enough space for a large collection of concert posters with room for more.

The ability to grow and add to the home’s design was an important element in the homeowners’ vision and Morse’s design.

The homeowners say that Morse has left them room to grow and add elements to the design.

“He had options and back-ups ready all the time. We have great ideas, but committing to something is a struggle. Jason could take all these ideas and make them real.”
