As we say goodbye to the harsh winter months, spring is a prime time to start decorating the home, both inside and out.
New research from whatprice.co.uk has just revealed the top renovation projects Brits are planning in the coming weeks and months. Not only is spring a time of renewal, but on a practical level, warmer temperatures and longer daylight hours make it easier to complete tasks, while better ventilation helps to manage dust and paint fumes.
Taking into consideration the top monthly Google searches for home renovations big and small, this top 10 list may inspire you to pick up a paintbrush or get DIYing soon. Here are the most popular home renovation and DIY projects this spring.
Top 10 renovation searches in the UK for spring:
- Kitchen (19,926 average monthly searches)
- Bathroom (13,459)
- General renovation (11,815)
- Loft and attic (10,965)
- Bedroom (6,398)
- Home extensions (5,174)
- Interior updates (4,718)
- Garage (4,536)
- Living room (3,886)
- Conservatory and sunrooms (2,609)
It’s probably not too surprising that kitchen renovations top the list. As the heart of the home, a renovated kitchen (from layouts to new cabinets) can be crucial to enhancing its functionality as a space for cooking, entertaining and socialising. It can also have a significant impact on property value, so it’s a wise investment if you’re looking to sell in the future.
As another high-traffic room in the home, bathrooms take the second spot, with tile-drenching and a spa-like aesthetic among the top design trends this year. Even for smaller updates, given that spring typically provides milder weather, it can come in really handy for ventilation and drying times for paint, grout, and the like.
General renovations round out the top three, with searches for ‘home renovation’, ‘house refurb’, and ‘property makeover’ all appearing within this category.
Other top-ranking searches include loft and attic updates, with an additional bedroom, office or even an extra living space (without the need for an extension) being key priorities, while almost 5,000 monthly searches relate to interior elements such as window replacements and new carpet installation.
There’s also a big uptick in those looking to repurpose or even convert their garage into a home gym or studio. ‘Converting a garage can maximise the utility of existing square footage and potentially increase a home’s value, and spring’s mild temperatures make it an ideal time to tackle these projects,’ says David Holmes, CEO at WhatPrice.co.uk. ‘Renovations related to extensions, conservatories and sunrooms can also improve ventilation in the house during heatwaves or warmer days in general.’
